Alexandria - safety and accommodation

Hello,
has anyone recently been to Alexandria? What is going on there? How safe is it for an independent travel? Any good reccommendation for an affordable accomodation? Any advices and comments are welcome

Alexandria is safe, but not during Friday, so I advice that if you would like to go to Alex, you would better stay at the hotel during demonstrations time, which is usually on Friday. As for recommending a hotel, I prefer Iberotel Borg Al Arab as it is luxurious hotel and near from the airport.
