Abadoned Dogs & Cats

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Croatia

Sometimes Dalmatia can truly depress. One such sad example is the way some look after their domestic animals.

Does anybody know of a reputable centre or sanctuary for abandoned dogs or cats in Central Dalmatia?

You are right. Dalmatia is very specific and sometimes even in some not so shining examples. I would like to defend them because I have heard so many stories when I was a small kid concerning the animals. One of the worst stories was a way how the peasants used to get rid of their old and unproductive donkeys. They were just throwing them in the karst caves. Of course, it used to be that way, and today the situation is greatly improved, but it is not up to the standards that have to be adopted.

As far as I know, there is actually just one reputable centre for abandoned dog and cats. It is As-eko and is situated in Šibenik. Their web site: http://www.as-eko.hr/index.html . They have strict "no kill" policy!

All over eastern europe there is a really bad stray / feral dog problem. There have been two major waves of abandonment. One after communism fell and then in the last few years due to dire economic problems. Most of these countries do not have the resources to deal humanely with these animals - what threadbare social program would you like these countries to cut to humanely house the 10s of thousands of feral dogs running around? How about you worry about the people in these countries before the animals?

Number 2 , the OP was simply expressing an opinion not making a political statement. Relax.

Very useful Flumy, as always. Thank you so much. I will look into it.

The reference yesterday was brought on by somebody attempting to drown a kitten just days old and my effort to rehouse it. It is not the first or last time I will be witness to such actions sadly in this area. A depressingly parochial entry by #2 sadly only serves to reinforce this.
