A week in Tokyo - 2 to 7 Sept

Country forums / North-East Asia / Japan

I will be in Tokyo for a week from 2 to 7 or 8 Sept. This time I am travelling with my cousin, as my wife decided to stay home. We are rather interested in technology and cars, though not totally averse to the countryside either. Any ideas what to do? Since it is only for a week, I was thinking of hitting the tech stores for half the time, and taking in the nearby countryside (if there are any which are easily accessible). Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi

i went to Tokyo with my wife a couple of years back and we stayed a few days in the city. You can get around pretty fast on the Shinkansen so if you want to visit other cities it is not a problem. I have posted this trip report with pictures on my homepage and maybe this can give you an impression of what to expect :-) Get in touch if you have any questions :-)

1

Maybe a countryside trip to Nikko and surrounds.

For techy stuff the Miraikan (emerging science museum) in Odaiba is good.
You can visit the Toyota motors factory and special exhibition hall.
You have to book the tour in advance.

It is far from Tokyo. But, you can go there easily by using Shinkansen train.

There is a Toyota exhibition hall in Odaiba as well where you can at least see a bunch of different cars and other various car-related exhibits. Free.

Check here for factory tours, etc. (Nissan seems much closer)

I second the recommendation for Nikko. I posted some notes about the city from my recent trip. It is definitely worth a night or two.
