a thailand embassy or consulate in ub?

Country forums / North-East Asia / Mongolia

Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain a visa for Thailand in UB? If so, where is the embassy or consulate? How long does it take to get one. I have a U.S. passport. Thanks.

There isn't an embassy of Thailand in Mongolia (it's under the jurisdiction of the embassy in Beijing). However, it seems there's a consulate general in Ulan Baatar with an honorary consul. I don't know if they can issue visas but you can ask them about it. You can find the contact details on this web

You get 30 days on arrival in Bangkok for a tourist, so you don't need a Thai visa unless you're working there.

If you are arriving in Thailand by land border and no visa, you only get 15 days entry. 30 days' entry applies to entering by flights and no visa.

As a first go, I'd try the Honorary Consul in Ulan Bator per #1. If you have no Chinese visa and do not wish to visit China (which rules out overland options), you can fly U.B.-Beijing-Bangkok and transit Beijing for no more than 24 hours, Chinese-visa free. Then get your 30-day entry stamp at BKK airport and if you need a longer stay, buy some time to figure out your next move to get a longer visa somewhere in SE Asia.

Or fly UB-Seoul-BKK and avoid China entirely. There is definitely a Thai Embassy in Seoul, but not sure what their visa policies are.

If you have a valid Chinese visa, getting a Thai visa (tourist or non-immigrant O of various types) is possible in China, but this year the application rules have been tightened and the new Consul at Thai Embassy Beijing wants a lot more documentation including bank statements...just to issue a tourist visa. It was a deterrent to me getting a 60-day visa at all, which fortunately I could deal with just 30 day entry stamp on the last visit. Not sure how loose or tight the policy is at Thai Consulates in Shanghai or elsewhere in China.

May as well update this thread some: Thanks to #1 anillos' link .doc, I telephoned the Thai consulate here in Ulaanbaatar today re: securing a 90 day Thai visa. Alas, they can only issue Thai visas for folks with a resident Mongolian visa (i.e. not tourist folks only here for a month like me.)

But not a problem. I've got a 3 month visa for Vietnam (been living there for about a year, but now want to relocate long-term to Chiang Mai, Thailand), so will just get the Thai visa in Vietnam. Just thought I'd try getting one here 'cuz I've got 8 days to spare before I return to Vietnam.
