Мерси (Russian) is a very widely understood Gallicism in Russia...but probably only to the same extent that "merci" is a very widely understood Gallicism in English-speaking countries.

#7 - I'm told only women use "merci" in Egypt, although I suspect this is an exaggeration as I'm pretty sure a man said it to me the other day. Of course, he may have been impelled to unusual use of language due to the inherently amusing situation of finding himself talking to a foreigner.

I once had occasion to ask how to say "thank you" in Armenian. I was told that there is an expression in Armenian but it's usual to say "merci".
