6 nights in northern Morocco

Country forums / Africa / Morocco

Hi all,

The four of us (2 adults, 2 kids aged 8 and 10) arrive in Tangier with six nights to spend before we are due in Fez. The kids want to see the beach, and I'd like to see the mountains.
We figured on an itinerary of:
2 nights in Tangiers,
2 nights in Assilah,
And 2 nights in Chefchouaen

Is this reasonable to accomplish including travel time?
What is the best mode of transportation, train or rental car?

Thanks for your help!

...... while Assilah is connected by Rail to Tangier, Chefchouaen isn't being located in a hilly area where the bus works better.

Assilah is a favourite destination for Moroccan families to holiday or for day-trips to the seaside, its a terrific place.
That said...... its always important to know when you'll be in Morocco, time of year and/or religious events can impact travel, accommodation etc.?

For the itinerary posted, a hired-car might be best.

I would say its doable - although Assilah isn't connected to Chef.

Busses run from Tangier to Chef a few times a day - its around 3.5-4 hours.

Assilah and Tangier are easily connected by rail and road - could easily day trip from one to the other!

Rental car then the kids get the chance to see the M'zoura neolithic stone circle and the Roman remains of Ad Mercuri (Cotta), see map of the two sites at https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/35.5203751,-5.914594/Cromlech+de+Mzoura,+Mzoura,+Tangier-Tetouan,+Morocco/@35.4602908,-6.0064983,22824m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0xd0bbd9c321d81bf:0x4d0c98e145a9ef3b!2m2!1d-5.9439424!2d35.4041263

Thank you for the helpful replies.

Hiring a car for the itinerary as posted would indeed be the best move. For those unfamiliar with Morocco, as we are, it helps to know the roads are fine, and the driving is erratic but responsible. Cars drift from lane to lane routinely and without signalling, but people honk politely as they pass on the highway to give warning that they are there. Anyone interested in driving in Morocco should be a confident driver, but needn't be afraid.
We arrived in the midst of 4 days of rain and even thunderstorms in Tangier, so gave Assilah a miss. Chefchouaen is every bit as beautiful and mellow as they say, and we are glad for the extra days here. Certainly worth a visit.
The bus from Tangier is 45dh, and 3+ hours. Grand taxi can be had for 500dh, and cuts the time in half. Car rentals are about 500dh per day.
