6-9 Months London to Singapore - Rough Costs

Interest forums / Gap Year & Round the World Travel

Hi Everyone!

Me and the wife are planning an overland extravaganza from London to Singapore including stops in Russia, Mongolia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore and then on to Indonesia and Philippines. We reckon that we're going to go for 9ish months and flexible about how long we spend in each location.

I'm after advice on the overall costings - do you think £28,000 for would cover the entire trip?

I'm sure that some context is required so here is a rough idea of length of time we're thinking of spending in each place:
Overland via trans-mongolian starting St Petersburg
China - approx 4-5 weeks (depending on visas)
Vietnam - 2-3 weeks
Cambodia - 2 weeks
Laos - 2 weeks
Thailand - 3-4 weeks
Burma - 2-3 weeks
Malaysia - 2-3weeks
Singapore < 1 week
Indonesia - 4 weeks
Philippines - 4 weeks

The amount of time we are spending in each place is purely indicative and at best a rough approximation, I'm more interested in whether the finances make this itinerary doable.

Thoughts please!

Thanks,
N

I am making the assumption that when you say overland from London to Singapore you are visiting the other European countries on the way to St Petersburg to start your train journey and not flying straight into St Petersburg.

Your budget is very good and should see you through for whole journey with some left over.

28000 British pounds coverts to $44000Usd and for 2 people for the countries you are travelling through will be more then enough if you are travelling as a budget style traveller for 9 months.

When I say budget style traveller, I am meaning you will be eating at local eateries (self catering in Europe), being able to have a few drinks and a big night on occasion. Staying in basic, clean accommodation with your own room, not dorm. Not having to hitch hike or camp unless by choice, not by budget.

Budget is good..i agree with gerard.

That is about £100 a day (US$160) a very considerable budget for 2 people in most of those countries.

I was hoping that'd be enough money, thanks for the reassurance!!
