4x4 Rental in Iceland?

Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Iceland

Anyone have any tips, suggestions, etc on renting a 4x4 for about 5 days in Iceland, we plan on driving around the country. Will be there the last 2 weeks of August.

Everywhere i've looked so far the prices seem VERY high, as in $1500+ CDN.

Also is 5 days enough time to drive around the ring road and see lots of sights?

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

$ 1500 for how many days ??

for 5 days.

I've found prices from $1000-2000+ euro's.

Seems very steep to me!

$ 200 - $ 300 per day for a 4X4 in the high season is not really much.

No - plenty of time for doing the actual driving at the ring road (if you skip seeing Reykjavik) - but not for seeing much.

BTW - why a 4WD - there is no reason for that on the Ring Road.

And it seems that you are not aware that: renting cars in Europe typically costs "twice" what they do in NAmerica - and in Iceland car rental in high season is much more costly than in Europe (shorter season, cars do not last).

Im aware it costs more, I just wanted to be sure that I wasn't losing my mind, or missing out on a better deal? Who is the best to rent from?

So if 5 days isn't enough to drive around, and venture off road and see the sights, how long do you suggest? 7 days would probably be a bit better?

Thanks.

You can try to send email to those 2 rentals : good rental in Iceland --- another good one

You can also look at the prices here : one more good rental where I can get you a code to get 10 % discount.

Thank you very much!! :)

"...around, and venture off road" - off-road driving is illegal in Iceland. Arctic nature is far to fragile to "heal" fast after driving.

9

Hopefully by "off-road" you meant "off tarmac onto rough roads".

10

Yes, that is what I meant. I apologize for the confusion. I would not want to harm the environment in anyway while there.

If you need the discount i have a code for you

BTW: What is better...to bring EURO or the native money with me? Can you help me with this question?

Thanks

Withdraw ISK on you debit/credit card for those very, very rare occations where you need cash (Iceland is the very strong "plactic"-country)

If youi really by some special reason want to travel around with cash: You are from Switzerland?? Bring Swiss Francs - never exchange twice - and never try to buy ISK outside Iceland - they tend to take you for another 10-20% outside Iceland if you can get the currency at all - remember how "small" the currencey is (3-400,000 inhabitants).

I have so far not heard anything rely bad about them but I will ask people that rent trugh me to tell me how it went. I had a car from them today and it worked out fine :)

If you plan to stay on the ring road, there is no need for 4x4. Just a good car with at least 2 liter engine (stay away from the smalles cars). If you plan to leave the ring road and aventure in to the gravel roads of Iceland, 4x4 would be better option.

If you plan for 4x4, the one I really like is Nice cars (http://www.nicecars.is), but if you just want to rent cheap car you can pick cheaper rentals such as http:///www.sadcars.is. Be aware that they quote the price with out any insurance, so you need to calculate the full price to compare.
