3 months in Southern Spain

I am looking to put down a few roots in Southern Spain for perhaps 3 months. I would like to be able to do day trips in the vicinity and maybe do a few nights in Northern Morroco, and maybe a few nights in Portugal. I would also like to be in a city of a reasonable size and enough going on. I am retired, interested in. buildings, galleries, walking - very open minded really. I have been spoilt with ideas from the Thorn Tree community in the passed so thanking you in advance and looking forward to hearing from anyone who can make suggestions. I am planning to house swap - something I haven't tried before.

Have you secured a visa that will allow three months in Spain?

As an Australian with a valid passport from your country you dont need a visa for Spain and you can stay for 90 days (not three month).

Thanks for reminding me of the 90 days as opposed to 3 months. Just have to think of a nice central spot in the south where I can semi put my roots down now

Do you want a coastal place or doesn't that matter.
What time of the year?

Seville, above all else.

Malaga if you want to stay on the coast.

Granada if you want something smaller than Seville.

In my mind, nothing else in Southern Spain qualifies as a city of reasonable size and enough going on, though Cadiz and Cordoba are also possible candidates.

Seville not in the summer months.

That is 4 months.

It is personal, but as a place to live in, June in Seville (or Cordoba) would generally be too hot to me.
Last year in June while i was staying on the coast south of Cadiz a couple of Sevillanos arrived in the hotel where i was staying. They had fled their city because of the heat. That evening it was an item on the Spanish TV news with images of deserted streets in Seville because of the unbearable heat. It could have been exceptional for June, but certainly not uncommon.
March - May would be different.

Thanks so much artemis2 for your helpful comments. Next question (seeing you seem to know Seville) if I was to hang out in Seville for 3 months, what is a good area? My requirements are: security for an older single woman, public transport, reasonable handy to supermarket or mini market, reasonably interesting neighbourhood for me to walk in, and feel happy in. I am not looking for nightlife, but enjoy taking in the culture and enjoying galleries, markets, architecture, and music. Thank you again for being so helpful.

IMO, there really is no silver bullet. In March its really quite cold in a lot of areas in Andalucia, even Seville. April is 50-50. Most rental apartments are set up for summer weather and do not have adequate heating, insulation or ventilation necessary for colder, damper months.

For example, this year March and April were really quite cold and damp and summer kicked off on 15th of May. In 2014, April was quite nice from 6th of April onwards, but March, apart from a few days in the middle was really bad. In 2012 there were some nice days in March, but it was cold and damp until about 7th of May.

If it ends up being too hot in June, just take a break from Seville.

After numerous trips in Andalucia i have only once spent a couple of days in Seville about 10 years ago. I am not much into big cities when i travel and prefer towns, villages and countryside.
