2 Weeks in Belize

Country forums / Central America / Belize

I am looking at doing 2 weeks in Belize with my girlfriend. I know I want to spend time on Caye Caulker as well as going to see some Mayan ruins. How long should we spend on Caye Caulker? Are there any cool jungle hikes or anything like that? I would love to be able to see some wildlife while down there. Any tips and ideas feel free to share them!

I'd split between western Belize and Caulker with an overnight to Tikal. If you like to move around a lot, maybe one add'l spot. We like to leave the beachy parts till last for convenience to the airport as well as to relax; I'd plan at least 4 nights so you have 3 full days to explore. I've pasted links to some of my favorite Belize lodging and tour options below and you can see loads of photos, blogs, and detailed trip reports using the 1st link in the signature line. Happy trails!

Under no circumstances should you enter Abomigrease Caye
Consider flying into Cancun and continuing by bus, to save bread.
Check out Raggamuffin's website. I highly recommend their sunset and Placencia tours.
5 days is my limit on Caulker. You could start there, then 2 nights in the cayes on the sailing tour, then a night or 3 in Placencia before heading for Flores/Tikal.

Unless you do the Ragamuffin trip from CC to Placencia, I'd start off in the Cayo region. I prefer staying in town -- plenty of options for accommodation, close to restaurants, shops, banks, tour guides (if you need them), etc. -- but you might like the Parrot Nest Lodge -- better for jungle walks. I'll take a chance and add the website (since some other members seem to be allowed to do this without getting terminated like my ol' mate):

Tikal would have to be the number one Maya site in the region. You can get there yourself by bus (see the BelizeBus Travel Guide site; the link is on my profile page), or join a tour from San Ignacio.

If you haven't seen enough wildlife yet, the zoo is easily accessible by bus.

Depending on how much time you have, consider Lamanai, not so much for the site but for the trip along the river to get to the site. I wouldn't go any further north. If you skip Lamanai, you might have time to get out to the southern cayes if you're into snorkelling.

Like stoned-eddy says, 5 days is lots of time on CC

We were able to entertain ourselves on CC for 5 nights. There are terrific birds you can see by kayak, but no jungle walks there to speak of. For jungle walks, go to the Cayo area or further south--Cockscomb or Mayflower. Or to Tikal, lots of jungle there. We liked both Tikal and Xunantunich, plus Cahal Pech.

Hummingbird Haven on Hummingbird Hwy at mile marker 29.
I stopped in for 1 night and stayed 2 weeks.
Just like heaven.
Crystal clear stream flows around the property with lots of swimming holes.
Waterfalls, untouched jungle, 5 Blues Lake near by, caves, etc.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I can't wait to get on the plane and get there!
