2 full days Dubai, the must sees!?

Country forums / Middle East / United Arab Emirates

Hi,

In august I'm spending 2 days in Dubai.

What are the must sees?
Does anyone have some good tips?

Thanks.

August is blazing hot (47 - 49 degree Celsius) so moving around during the day is best avoided. Circa 8th, Ramadan starts so all small restaurants are closed till sunset. The large hotels will serve food albeit in closed off areas.

Must sees / dos in Dubai :

Go to the top of the Burk Khalifa and watch the sunset from At the Top / Visit the man made Palm Jumeriah Island (go to the Atlantis Hotel )/ visit the malls ; The Aquarium at Dubai Mall / The Ski Dome at the Mall of the Emirates / Browse through the real souk and spice market in Deira and the expensive Souk look alike market in Madinat Jumeriah / go for a ride down the creek in an Abra / browse around the Bastakiya & Shindagah area / have afternoon tea at the Burj (they have 2 - ask for the higher level)

Remember that its a very young country so anything you see is new (buildings) / of a smaller scale (the Dubai "museum").

Its too hot to do a dune bashing/ desert safari in August.

If you are here during Ramadan, please remember that tourists are also expected to respect the rules regarding eating reg Ramadan.

You CAN eat and drink at the airport as travellers are exempt from fasting as per Ramadan (as are pregnant ladies, little children and those who are ill)

While in the city, please carry water with you by all means, do drink to avoid dehydration, however drink discreetly (ie not in public or in full view of passersby). Ditto for snacking on the road (best to avoid it). Dress respectfully. No bare shoulders whether male or female : shorts if worn should be below the knee. No transparent clothes if a female / midriff should be covered. Alcohol will be served in hotel bars only after sunset.

A couple of years ago, on the first day of Ramadan I had to nicely ask a visibly hot and perspiring tourist (fresh off the plane and standing by a busy residential road waiting for his family to finish their shopping) who was shirtless and in a rather short pair of shorts to put his shirt back on as it wasn't appropriate.

Doing a minimal amount of reseach goes a long way:

hen, check out the Big Red Bus when you get to Dubai, it's a great way to tour Dubai and you can get on and off at different tourist points (it includes a day dhow trip on the creek).even takes you to Atlantis.
Another must do is an evening dhow cruise with buffet meal - great way of seeing old dubai at night from the creek.
