| ratamahatata08:01 UTC19 May 2007 | Hi all, I am looking for advice... We have 10 more days in Peru and do not exactly know where to spend them. We already went to Tacna, Arequipa (Colca canyon), lake Titicaca, Cusco and MP. We are now back in Cusco and flying back home out of Lima on May 30th. Can somebody please recomend some interesting places on the way to Lima (or maybe trip to the jungle)? Thanks a lot. Frank

There are loads of places that might be honoured with your visit. You could fly to Lima and from there go to Lunahuaná (rafting or kayaking and wineries), Chincha (African culture & Hacienda San José), Pisco (Ballestas Islands with penguins, sea lions, lots of birds & Paracas national reserve with flamingos, sand buggy tour in desert), Ica & Huacachina Oasis (wine & pisco processing, Maria Reiche museum, sandboarding, desert trip) & Nazca (Nazca lines, Maria Reiche house & museum, Chauchilla cemetery, National Reserve Pampas Galeras). If you would go to all places you might have one more day left in Lima for shopping. Another option would be go inland to Chanchamayo (Junín province) which is Ceja de Selva. It's not jungle but you're close to it. From Chanchamayo you could visit a few waterfalls and swim around them, do some rafting, visit the botanical gardens, native communities, fruit gardens, some grottoes, Oxapampa, day tours into the jungle, wading through rivers, taste the delicious jungle food, ... Completely different from the places you visited before and a good climate. You could stay there five days and another few days in Huancayo. In Chanchamayo there are a dozen interesting hotels with pool at very reasonable prices. Both places primarily see national tourists but that doesn't mean those places aren't interesting, they just aren't located on the gringo trail. Huancayo itself is just a big city but there are many towns around it that deserve a visit and there are more festivals and festivities in and around Huancayo than days on the calendar.

You could travel back to Lima over land, through Andahuaylas (see Sondor ruins, Laguna de Pacucha), Ayacucho (beautiful colonial city, many students, various ruins nearby), Huancavelica (lovely mountain town, mineral pool with healing powers, nice markets, lovely trainride to...), Huancayo, Tarma. See pictures of this route on my travel website (link in signature > Photos > Peru 2006).
And here is one example of a thread about jungle visits. Are you on malaria medication?
Suerte, Cecilia
