Anti-semitic Graffiti in Krakow

Just got back from Krakow and was dismayed to see several anti-Semitic bits of graffiti dotted around the city which at first angered me, then dismayed me. 80% of it was accompanied by the now familiar "WISLA SHARKS" footy crew logos so I just put it down to brain-cell deficient, teenage "tough guys" trying to gain respect with their crews.

I also encountered the attitude that "the government takes our money and gives it to the Jews" from 1 or 2 people which got me thinking this misplaced…

Visiting Krakow over May Day / Constitution Day

Hello,

I am planning to visit Poland (Krakow) for the first time.

My visit might coincide with May Day and Constitution Day (May 1 and 3).

  • Does anybody know what it is like during this holiday period?
  • Are shops, supermarkets and restaurants closed?
  • If I want as 'authentic' (non-touristy) a visit as possible, is this a good/bad time to visit Krakow?

Thanks.

Visit Poland from Rügen?

Hej,

I'm going to Rügen in Germany this summer, and if it's not too far away, I would like to visit Poland. Are there any interesting Polish sights or cities near Rügen?

exchanging currency in Poland

A few words of advice how to change currency in Poland, as on one hand it is one of the best places in the world for changing cash (you can get really great rates) but on the other hand it may be confusing .

General advice: you can change cash in major currencies like EUR, USD or GBP at negligible cost in exchange booths located downtown in cities, labelled "KANTOR". Most are honest but take care to avoid few of them that are not.

To identify a honest "kantor", always pay attention that it…

Warsaw at Easter Time

We arrive in Poland on the Friday afternoon from Australia. Will supermarkets, restaurants and public transport be operating that day? Also what about the Saturday and Sunday? Also what about Prague on Easter Monday?

Cheers

4 days in the Tarys - Hiking - Mid April

I'd like to go hiking in the Tatrys and hike between the schroniskos. I'm fairly fit but I'm not a climber and not a regular hiker either. I run 15 kms a week and walk a fair bit. After looking at pictures, Orla perc would probably be too challenging for me even on a good day but I may decide to give it a go on a later trip after I've picked up my hiking and scrambling experience a bit . I've been up Rysy and found that straightforward. I'd like some basic scrambling and a good hike with views.

Gdansk and maybe Lodz

I'm in Krakow for work in April. I've been before & have booked a flight out of Gdansk as I got a cheap & convenient deal. And I'd like to see Gdansk. I can either fly to Gdansk from Krakow & spend all my time there or travel overland to Gdansk stopping en route. Possibly at Lodz. I only have a weekend so stopping would mean I just have 1 day & 1 night in each place (as opposed to 2 days & 2 nights). The distances are big, but overland would give me a chance to see something…

Place to stay in Warsaw

We'll be in Warsaw for couple nights in the third week of June before heading to different direction in In the country for several weeks. We also will be traveling with an eight years old, does anyone has a hotel recommendations in old town that the price is not to crazy? Two or three stars are fine with us, thank you.
