I'm planning a family history tour with my father (mid-60s) to visit the towns and areas where his parents lived before emigrating. A few questions about things to do/see:
1.Does anyone know the dates of the Jewish Cultural Festival in Sladkhow Maly?
2. Is there anything to see/do in Kutno? From what I've read it's just a normal town.
3. How much is antisemitism an issue in the more rural areas? I've been getting mixed messages on this, so anyone who currently lives there and can provide…
Just got back from Krakow and was dismayed to see several anti-Semitic bits of graffiti dotted around the city which at first angered me, then dismayed me. 80% of it was accompanied by the now familiar "WISLA SHARKS" footy crew logos so I just put it down to brain-cell deficient, teenage "tough guys" trying to gain respect with their crews.
I also encountered the attitude that "the government takes our money and gives it to the Jews" from 1 or 2 people which got me thinking this misplaced…
My visit might coincide with May Day and Constitution Day (May 1 and 3).
- Does anybody know what it is like during this holiday period?
- Are shops, supermarkets and restaurants closed?
- If I want as 'authentic' (non-touristy) a visit as possible, is this a good/bad time to visit Krakow?
A few words of advice how to change currency in Poland, as on one hand it is one of the best places in the world for changing cash (you can get really great rates) but on the other hand it may be confusing .
General advice: you can change cash in major currencies like EUR, USD or GBP at negligible cost in exchange booths located downtown in cities, labelled "KANTOR". Most are honest but take care to avoid few of them that are not.
To identify a honest "kantor", always pay attention that it…
I'd like to go hiking in the Tatrys and hike between the schroniskos. I'm fairly fit but I'm not a climber and not a regular hiker either. I run 15 kms a week and walk a fair bit. After looking at pictures, Orla perc would probably be too challenging for me even on a good day but I may decide to give it a go on a later trip after I've picked up my hiking and scrambling experience a bit . I've been up Rysy and found that straightforward. I'd like some basic scrambling and a good hike with views.
I'm in Krakow for work in April. I've been before & have booked a flight out of Gdansk as I got a cheap & convenient deal. And I'd like to see Gdansk. I can either fly to Gdansk from Krakow & spend all my time there or travel overland to Gdansk stopping en route. Possibly at Lodz. I only have a weekend so stopping would mean I just have 1 day & 1 night in each place (as opposed to 2 days & 2 nights). The distances are big, but overland would give me a chance to see something…
