Working in New Zealand over 30 years old

Hey,

I’m 33 years old and conscious that I’m not getting any younger. I really feel like I need to experience life a little more before settling down. Ideally, I should have been thinking about this 10 years ago but hey there’s no point in dwelling on the past.

Anyway, I’m too old for a WHV but I found the site BUNAC that offers a year long working visa in New Zealand for ages up to 35. So I’m thinking drop everything and just do it. I have no major commitments apart from work (I work in…

All accommodation below is for private double, normally with a shared bath. Prices between $62 – 128, normally around in the $65 - $75 bracket.
Christchurch – Point Break Backpackers in New Brighton Backpacker, tiny room, nice area close to beach, pubs and supermarket
Akaroa – Bon Accord – hut out the back, shower in almost open air, OK but got lots of sand fly bites

Sharing a dorm booking with the girlfriend

Hello,

Me and the girlfriend are going to New Zealand for a year on the WHV and we will be in Auckland looking for jobs.

Obviously the backpacker in me wants to save money.

Can we just make one booking in a hostel for a single dorm bed, and then share it, effectively halfing the bill?

Do hostels in NZ normally go for this?

If not, are there any particular hostels that we could book and try and be sneaky about it?

Has anyone ever done this before?

Many thanks,

Adam

Restaurants - South Island

Any restaurant / fine dining recommendations for the South Island?

Thinking Italian / Asian / New Zealand food, I'm a vegetarian who doesn't eat fish either. I've heard about Fleur's Place but see reviews are very divided and don't want to spend heaps of money to be disappointed. My budget would be $50-60/70 approx for a couple of courses - my treat meal out on my upcoming trip in May.

Thanks!

Rotorua and Matamata

Hi,

We're a couple of lively grey nomads who will be Rotorua for 2 days in late April. Can anyone recommend a thermal experience that is good value for money? I have a brochure that lists numerous places but no prices and wonder whether some places are a bit over the top. We're keen to see thermals and bathe too.

Also, we're thinking of doing a Hobbit tour at Matamata but not sure where to do it from.

Thanks in advance,
Anne

Cell phones

I'm traveling to NZ this July and wondering about using my US cell phone. It's my understanding that I can switch out my sim card and buy a NZ card for use while I am there. Does anyone have any experience with this? We will be there for 6 weeks traveling both NI and SI. Thanks.

Travel Insurance on NZ Working Holiday Visa

Hello,

Immigration says I need travel insurance for the whole year, but I dont know how long I will be over there for.

I was thinking of getting cover for a couple of months and then extending it when im there.

Who has been on a new zealand working holiday visa and actually been asked to show their travel insurance policy document?

Is it a big risk not to get it and will I not be let into the coutry if I cant provide those details?

Many thanks,

Adam

Places to travel in NZ South Island?

Hi,

I'm planning on visiting NZ (South Island) for the first time and I have been spending the last two days trying to figure out the places I should visit.

I'll be flying into Christchurch, but I'm happy to fly back to Oz from Queenstown, Dunedin or Christchurch.

I'm planning on staying for 9 days and leaving on the 10th day.

Day 1 Arrive at CHC at 1500

Day 2 Activities at CHC

Day 3 Drive to Lake Tekapo and spend night there (visit the observatory at night)

Day 4 Don't know

Day 5 Drive…
