Hi!

I'm traveling to S. America for 4-6 months with my boyfriend, starting in Buenos Aires. I'm an avid trekker and have all the gear I need. My boyfriend is new to trekking and doesn't have any gear.

Do people recommend I bring all my personal gear and buy all my boyfriend's gear in the States before I leave? Or is trekking gear easy/cheap to come by in Argentina? What about fuel (propane canister) for my stove?

Thanks!

Callie

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are flying off to Greece to do some hiking (among other things) on Saturday.
We were planning to visit parts of the Peloponnese or Crete and we were wondering which of the two would make for the most convenient area to hike: we would like to do it during 3/4 days (day hikes or even longer ones split over several days) and, importantly, we're looking for well marked trails. There seems to be lots of beautiful places throughout Greece (the Zagohororia, the Mani…

i'm flying into a destination over 3000m (shangrila, yunnan) and plan on spending a full day and night to acclimatise before setting out.

However the first stop (benzilan) is below 2000m. Plan to spend a night there, and the following day be hiking and sleeping at over 3000 (maybe 4000m).

do people think there's any point to spending a day acclimatising in shangrila if the following night i'm back below 2000m?

maybe spending time in benzilan on the way down rather than up is the better…

I'm just finishing up a season skiing in Portillo, Chile and am heading off travelling for a few months. I'd like to climb something high, but not too technically challenging. I'd love to do Aconcagua, but it seems the climbing season doesn't start until late November. Ojos del salado seems to fit the bill as well, but again all the guided trips seem to leave later in the year. Does anyone know whether if I arrived in Copiapo I'd be able to find a trip leaving in October? How realistic would un…

Hi,
My wife and I have trekked in Nepal for 16 days, mainly on altitude 4000-5000m, and upto 5500m.
We returned to Kathmandu yesterday morning, later we skipped the planned dinner, and instead we slept for 13-14 hrs.
My wife, on top of that, got upset stomach.
I've trekked before on similar altitudes in South Am, but usually upto 5-6 days, and never had similar symptoms.
Could it be this time a readjustment problem, a sort of (rich) oxygen shock?

Hello all!

I do realize that what will follow is a very, very, broad question (but I am also not looking for a very specific answer ;-)).

At the end of November I might have a couple of weeks holiday (unexpected). I would like to use these 2 weeks to do a hiking/trekking trip. I only have one problem, I have no idea where to go to...

Everest Base Camp has been on the top of my todo-list for a very long time. However with only 2 weeks to spare it will have to wait a little longer. I also…

This will be an inspiration!

A friend of mine just posted this:
5000 miles, 3000 photos, 930 people. Less than 3 minutes.
Gotta watch it!

Hi Thorn Tree,

I wonder if anyone can help me with the following questions? I'm considering doing the Singalila Ridge trek (Mana Bangjang to Rimbik via Phalut) next spring. I understand this crosses over the Nepali border in places, but haven't read anywhere about needing a Nepal visa - I'm assuming just an Indian visa is fine for this route?

Also, I am planning to arrange the trek once I get to Darjeeling, is it relatively easy to join treks or find others to trek with once in Darjeeling? Or…
