Hello all,
I'm planning to visit some fairly remote parts of the world this year (Tibet/Mongolia/West Africa, etc) and need to get a new stove to replace my Camping Gaz one. The Primus omni-fuel seems to have got good reviews, but I'm wondering if I really need to spend £100 to get a stove that'll do the job. Does anyone know what kinds of fuel are available in these places? Any ideas for cheaper alternatives?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Matt.

Best all round stove? MSR XGK
Worked great in the Himalaya, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Scotland, Switzerland.........................the list goes on.
MSR XGK
I use the MSR XGK also but carry the MSR pocket Rocket so I can use it when I find butane, it weights 4 oz so it's not much of a stain on the back and its great when I have butane as its easy to use, its not so good at high altitudes though. Get one of the multi fuel stoves and take the camp gaz stove also.

Thanks guys. Nwdiver, why do you prefer to use butane? I think the Primus omnifuel can be used with gas...
Primus Himalaya Multifuel & MSR XGK are the best- it is hard proved!
Have a nice trip!
Igor.
I like two stoves if I can find the butane or camping gaz (iospropane or whatever). When trekking with 4 people we carry to MSR stoves I wouldn't do that with 2 people so a can of gaz with the Pocket Rocket and my multi-fuel stove works fine. Also the gaz stove is nice for that cup of tea in the morning without the need to prime (maybe clean) the multi fuel stove. Multi fuel is great but what you put through it to cook is often not so great. I stick to white gas and try hard to get it where ever I go.
If you gum it up with dirty kerosene the I wouldn’t work at 5 am before an early start without the tear down clean and reassemble routine. The gaz type stove is off the races so to speak.
Another issue with multi fuel stoves is I have gas canisters (bottles) stashed in several places (it’s a one way trip for them) as even empty ones that have been used are suspect on planes. Make sure you use a stove that may take a standard gas bottle; the MSRs use several 3rd party bottles which is good in the back of beyond. Also get the maintenance kit on day one, don’t wait for an o-ring to split, I think the rebuild maintenance kit should come with the stove.
