URENT INFO NEEDED RE: CAMPING FUEL!

Interest forums / Trekking & Mountaineering

hi, we are in italy camping our way around with a trangea stove. this takes methylated spirits/ ether alchohol and it has been impossible to find it ANYWHERE in italy.
Does anyone know where this can be bought, or if it is called something different here?

at the moment it just means we have to eat out which is hardly anything to complain about but are heading to spain for two weeks in the pyranees and are starting to get worried that the situation will be the same there.

so please any info would be much appreciated

grazie

You have to find out the local name. In the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, metho is called methylated spirits. In the US it is called denatured alcohol. In Europe, it may be called spirits, brennspiritus (Germany), alcool a bruler (France), sprit (Norway), spiritus (Netherlands).

Hey there!
I'm Italian, so I could try and help you with this. I'm not experienced in camping but ether alchohol is called just ALCOOL in Italian and is pronounced just the same as alchohol. Anyway you should try and ask a shop specialised in camping gear or if you camp in a camping site ask the staff as they normally provide you with this kind of stuff or know where you can find it.

I know you already have a stove, but you'll make your two weeks in the Pyrenees alot easier if you just buy a CampingGaz FeatherLite stove (in Spain they're available at Carrefour, Alcampo, or any outdoor-gear store). They only cost 22 euros, are lightweight, are very reliable, and the gas canisters are available everywhere.
