Hey All-
Has anyone tried to bring trekking poles, either inside a pack or loose, into an airplane cabin? It looks like the Transportation Safety Board in the USA allows walking sticks and umbrellas on board, but they don't allow golf clubs. It's not clear what their policy on trekking poles would be??? I'd think they fall within the "walking stick" category, but would like to know more concretely from other people's experience to avoid disappointment.
Btw, I usually travel very light, and ultimately only have one carry-on pack with me and no checked baggage. Erego, I'd have to check the trekking poles by themselves, if they're not allowed as carryons.
Thanks everyone.

I live in the UK and I have had the same problem, especially since 9/11. Some airlines allow them as carry-on and some don't. In some cases I have been allowed to carry them with me on the outward journey but not on the inbound even though I was using the same airline! I always pack them with the points protected to prevent accident to other people. If you are refused permission to carry them with you ask if you can carry them to the door of the 'plane and hand them to the cabin staff to stow them for you. This has usually worked for me.

Hi there,
Once , almost 2 years ago I brought the treking poles with me in the checked baggage from Bucharest to Paris. I don't even tryed to carry them as hand baggage. Even like that they asked me what is "that big sharp object" and put a "Security" piece of paper on my baggage that contained the trekking poles. IMHO, chances to be allowed to carry them into the cabin are low. Indeed, in this case the only solution is to check the trekking poles by themselves.
All best,
Radu
