I know this would be out of season, but how prohibitively so? And what is the trekking situation like down there? Bring your own tent? Lodge to lodge? Go through an organization? Any recommendations on a good 5-12 day trek in those parts?

Yunnan should be OK (unless you go over 4000 m), Sichuan depends on the region.

You could consider trekking from Laoyulin over Konka Gompa to Shangmuju (7-10 days). Accomodation is partly available on this route but I am not sure about March (did part of it in in October). A nice trek in Norhern Sichuan is Anymaqen circuit but it is not doable alone and you need an experienced guide. Easier would be a ca. 6 days trek from Litang to Mt. Genyen.
In Yunnan I have heared about an interersting route from Feilai to Kawakarpo, should be a bit strenuous.

I am not expert in the region, but went trekking there last October as part of a journey from Shangri La to Chengdu. I would suggest sticking to Yunnan. Litang is very high and was freezing in early October. I did the Yubeng trek to Felaisi, but imagine it would be very cold in March and maybe not feasible. Also went to Yading - it was freezing too. There is a trek from Lugu Lake to Yading but I think it would be too clod/snowy in March

I enjoyed Tiger Leaping Gorge in November 2007, and there is a possible extension. Another option might be the Nujiang Valley - you could go to Dali then up the valley. Do a search for Nujiang valley on this forum.

Better to go northwest part of Yunnan, such as go trek around LiJiang(Tiger leaping gorge trek to Lugu lake, 7days, March is one of nice season.the highest point is 34oom,Lugu lake is 2800m).

Thanks yakraveller (great name), I am looking for a website that outlines that trek (day to day, distance and altitude gain), any recommendations?
