Hi

I might be fortunate enough to be going on a trekking expedition to Everest region of Nepal in about October/November this year. While this is still at the planning stage, and has not been given the 'green light' yet, those of us on our team have been given two different options for routes for our trek from which to choose the favoured one.

1. This one is I guess the well-trodden route to Everest Base Camp and back. The route starts from Lukla and then heads onto Namche Bazaar, Thyangboche, Dingboche, Lobuje, Gorak Shep and Everest base camp itself before then heading back.

2. The other option is I am told less travelled but offers better panoramic views. However, it is somewhat more strenuous I am told. Also starting in Lukla, the route then goes to Namche Bazaar, Mongla, Dole, Machhermo, Gokyo, Renjo Pass before then heading back Lukla.

(Apologies if there are any mis-spelling of place names there.)

However, since I haven't visited this region before I really cannot make up my mind which is my favoured. So I thought that I'd ask those on this branch with experience/knowledge of the region for their opinions and advice on the relative merits of these routes. (Any links to relevant websites covering areas on either routes would be of interest too.) This would be of great help.

Thanks.

Paul

Choice #2 without any hesitation! Hopefully, however, you are in good physical condition. #1, deservedly well-trod, is a nice trek, but #2, oh la la, will give you a view of the mountains that not many have had access to... The view from Renjo-la is something to die for! But then, so are the views from Gokyo Ri and Cho la and Kala Pattar, etc., etc. Have a good trek. I envy you! Namaste!

Our group planned and took 25 days from Lukla to Lukla. We went to Gokyo then over Cho La to EBC. Because we took so much time no one had any altitude sickness at all - which was wonderful. Not even a headache! We spent 4 nights at Gokyo - had terrific weather and a great time - it's beautiful! That trek is amazing because of the incredible mountains - I'd recommend it highly.

Thanks for all the advice so far, people. And for the best wishes. I'm really looking forward to it. The chance of a lifetime. Fortunately #2 seems to be the favoured choice of my trekking companions too so far!

I have heard that it is not possible to see Everest from the Nepalese base camp. Is this this really true?

And would it be right that #2 would provide the better views of Everest itself anyway? Weather permitting.

I get the impression that going to EBC is more about saying that one has actually been there, than rather it being a better trekking route for the region.

Cheers

Paul

Hello Paul,

I sent you an email but incase it doesn't reach you - I read your threads with interest and I would like to trek Everest, the most challenging and scenic route and was looking for organised treks and then I wondered, maybe I could join your group? I'm fit, easy going and used to roughing it abit and your trek dates (Oct/Nov) were about the time I was thinking off...

What do you think - and no worries if it's not convenient - I just followed the whim to ask :)

Hi willyroadrunner,

Your right you cant see Everst from EBC, your better off going up Kallar Patar which is actually four hundred meters higher, and overlooks the Khumbu glacier. From there you will see the top of Everest and Nuptse. You will also get great views looking back down the valley and lots of other peaks into the bargain.

If you spend two nights at Gorak Shep, which I did, you can spend one afternoon going up Kalar Patar and then the next you can go along the glacier to EBC. If the weather isn't great then you can perhaps go back up Kallar Patar.

If you go to Gokyo - then you can see views of Everest from the top of Gokyo Ri, and if you have time there you can walk further alsong from Gokyo to near the fourth lake and see it from a point called scoundrels view. I haven't done the scoundrels view bit but have it on good authority its well worth the effort.

I have quite a few photos from this area on my website if your interested.

Have a good trek
Dave

Dave

Many thanks for the tips. Very useful. I shall certainly keep it in mind

And great website, by the way. The photos are fantastic. I wish mine were like that from when I visited the Annapurnas.

Better do not call your trecking plans an expedition while in Nepal. Otherwise considerable fees might apply ;-)
