I am going trekking in Kashmir in August with a very experienced trekking guide I was with in Nepal. He is a local and has set up his own trekking company. The trek is for 14 days costing $2500. I trust his judgment on security as he has delayed the trek for a couple of years while waiting for things to quieten down. I am looking forward to it as it should be interesting being closed off for so long to trekking.

Srinagar has gone thru a number of curfews in the last weeks. Yesterday five CRPF men were killed in central Srinagar, and in another incident a civilian was shot .
Shared cabs is easy , state buses run daily when the road is open. Made it from Jammu to Kargil in twentysix hours a couple of months ago.
