Hi,
A few of us are going to Morocco in June to trek to the summit of Toubkal.
Can anyone tell me what the current going rates for muleteers are?
Many thanks
Steve

I am not sure what a muleteer is but I am guessing it is either a porter type person or a guide, with or without a mule lol. I am not sure how much this will cost you but I can tell you that as poor as some of these Moroccan people are, when it comes to tourists they are as sharp as a razor with sterling or US dollars. I dont think you will get one cheep. A few years back I trekked on horseback across the high Atlas mountains, although I dont know how much these guides and porters cost, at the end when we tipped them £390.00 Sterling between 15 of them they were quite unhappy and asked for more.
It is very hard to convince them that you cant afford any more. after all you can afford to be in their country, while they couldnt ever imagine having enough money to come to yours. They will also ask for cigarettes (constantly), they will also tell you they have a headache so you will give them your paracetamol (take extra). At the end of your trip they will even try to convince you that they need your boots, hat, trousers, whatever. I have been told that this is a bit like a game to them, so basically thay are taking the p***. But then why not. have fun and I hope you find a cheap muleteer and you will still have some trousers at the end of it.

to go only up to the summit from Imlil (local town), you do not need a guide as the walk is pretty straight forward.
For any other extended trekking then a guide with a mule would be wise. It cost me and a friend about $40 USD per person per day for everything included (meals, guide, accoms, mule etc.)
Enjoy!

Thanks for your replies guys.
Perhaps I should explain that I have been to Morocco several times and I'm familiar with dealing with the local people. A few years ago I toured around the southern oasis routes and then climbed Mgoun.
In Morocco you don't have porters, the muleteer is the guy who owns the mule that carries the baggage you don't want to carry personally, he accompanies you (and his mule), but he is not a guide. All of us are experienced hikers and some of the guys are bushcraft/survival instructors. The reason for wanting to hire muleteers is because we are going to try and do a number of other surrounding summits in a fairly short time, also, we want to help the local economy but don't want to pay over the odds.
So if anyone has hired Muleteers from Imlil or maybe even Aroumd (not sure if that's possible),say in the last 8 months or so, can you let me know what you paid,
Many Thanks
Steve
