Teleki´s Turkana Expedition 2005

Interest forums / Trekking & Mountaineering

Hello there guys. This goes for the adventurer inside you.
We are preparing for the Autumm of 2005 an expedition in Northern Kenya. We ¨ll retrace part of Count Teleki´s expedition to Lake Turkana, beginning inBaringo and trekking all the way up the Suguta valley to the lake and then up the eastern shore till Koobi Fora. It will take around 3/4 months depending on the condition of the route.
This is a serious expedition in a part of Africa that is still wild and untouched. As there are no roads there we will use camels and be provisioned by air as well as carrying ranger escort due to the banditry endemic in the area. The costs will be shared between all the participants, no more than 7 or so allowing people to join for stages of say 15 days when possible.
Well, if you feel like having the time of your life PM or send us an email and I will give you all the info you may ask for.
Thanks

Hello
>
>We have scheduled the beginning of the expedition for October 2006 . We have to go during the rains to have some cloud cover as the
>insolation in any other time of the year will be awful ( imagine temperatures around 40º C in the shadow.....). The itinerary has been `preared by Ian Allan, Alex Fiksman and myself. They´re running a trekking and safari company from Nairobi who´s been working on expeditions for 25 years, being now the correspondent of National Geographic Expeditions in Eastern Africa. They have organised also some quite famous treks like the one for Rick Ridgeway´s book "The shadow of Kilimanjaro" and Robert Caputo´s " The ghosts of Tsavo". Maybe you know about them.
>Well, the itinerary. The basic thing is to begin in lake Baringo and follow all the Rift valley towards the southern tip of lake Turkana, turn east towards South Horr and then north along the eastern shore of lake Turkana towards Koobi Fora, on the Sibiloi NP. This is briefly the route on the map, but due to the nature of this journey we may change it depending on how the thing is going. We have estimated the costs around 90000$ maximum for a group of about 7/8 people, plus a couple of Samburu rangers as escort and the camelmen. Surely
>during the winter and spring we will accomodate the price according to how many people is finally coming and so on.
>You don´t have to commit now. Don´t worry. Just if you think you may join keep in contact and during February or March we will tell you how is the thing progressing. The only thing we need is to know about your experience with trekking and travel, if any. This is not a tourist trip, as you may understand and as we don´t know each other we would like to know the what to expect from everyone. Thank you very much for your interest and let´s hope to be together a year from now in Africa. Best regards.
