I am thinking of getting shock resistant trekking poles, which I figure will be a big step up from always using a tree branch and then sliding down a hill on my backside when the darn branch breaks. But - and here's the stupid part - the silly things don't "telescope" small enough to fit into my backpack. And they definitely don't fit into the duffel bag I normally take to the place where I'll be using the pole the most. So, how do you pack your trekking poles into your checked luggage so they won't get damaged on the plane? And how do you carry them around until such time as they are needed? What am I missing (apart from a brain)? Will be grateful for any helpful suggestions.

My Leki poles fit in my pack but since yours don't, why don't you tube them or just tape them together and lash them to your pack when flying?

I use a stubai ice axe with an extendable pole. It is great

Are you using two part trekking poles or tree parts ones ? I agree to way to go is to lash them to your pack. Or, I'd say, just check them as an individual luggage (even this might be a little risky).
All best,

My three part poles collapse small enough to fit in my duffle bag or pack, I guess they were designed for traveling. Sell your poles and get three part poles and you may not have the problem, unless your pack is very small. I travel with my pack, boots and extra clothes in a single duffle bag I stash when I’m trekking.

We use Leki poles and they fit into the packs if they are placed on a diagonal as the first things into the pack. Place socks on both ends of the poles, since they can strain against the pack when it is full or squashed. Because they are at the rear of everything else, they just sit there during the parts of the trip when we are not trekking. We've done this for many years with no problem (yet.)

Thanks everyone, sort of confirms what I had been thinking. But where to find Leki poles? (I'm in Vancouver, BC) ... the three-part ones sound ideal but the few places I've checked out here only have two-part ones.

My 3-part Lekis don't fit into my pack. They do fit in my duffle. When not on board airline or when not using them I clip them to the side of the pack.

You can mail order from REI, or check eBay.

Go to MEC and get the Komperdell contour titanals they carry the three part one, I bought them there. The ones I use have long grips so you can choke up for short up hills not readjust the poles. I'm in Vancouver also.
