I would welcome advice re trekking up to Point Lenana. How difficult ? How safe ? When to go ?

Not particularly difficult for a hiker in good shape. Nothing technical. Several routes possible. Pretty safe, although it is possible to get lost (especially in fog) and there are numerous wild animals in the forest. But if you stay with your guide (porters also available) you should be ok. Less touristy than Kili, and nine hundred meters lower, so potentially less altitude problems. Good climatization remains important. I went up Sirimon route (down Naro Moru route) and stayed two nights in Shiptons Camp at 4200 meters or so, from where you can hike around the peaks. Did this in 1995.

We went around the mountain and up Lenana in 1987. Stayed in the ratty Two Tarn (Minto's), slightly less ratty other hut (can't remember the name, but it has "tarn" in it ) and the much less ratty Austrian hut. The hike was spectacular! No big dangers, saw no large critters above 10,000ft. We started at the Chogoria (aka Meru Mountain) bandas the night before starting and the night we got off the trail. This would be a worthy destination in itself. We saw no one until we got to the second hut. This trek was a definite highlight in our month in Kenya. PM me for more particulars.

Can't answer, but I recommend reading "No Picnic on Mt Kenya", one of the best adventure books ever written.

We did it to the top and was our first time me and my wife.We started from Sirimon and ended to Chogoria with guide Joseph. He was good and now most of our family and friends do with Joseph. You can get him in
