Hi
Im planning on going up Mt. Toukbal on Jan 1 or 2nd.<BR>Ive contacted the refuge and booked myself and friend in for a couple of nights, so we can make a summit attempt.
Has anyone undertaken an unguided winter ascent, or is it preferable to hire a guide, I know that the maps of the region arn`t as good as the UK ones!
How much snow is there likely to be?
How long would a winter ascent take from the refuge (up and down?)
Would there be a lot of people on the mountain, is route finding easy?
Which maps has anyone found the most useful?
Any advice??
Cheers
Sara

You can get a very good map of the Toubkal region in Marrakesh. For Mt.Toubkal ascent you dont even need it since the ascent from the refugee is quite straight forward. No one can predict the amount of snow and snow condition. You need to be prepared for everything (deep snow - avalanche danger, ice) so bring necessary winter equipment (crampoons, ice axe). It is not technically demanding ascent but if you are not experienced in mountaineering you should definitely go with the guide. There is guide office in Imli where you can hire a registered guide from the area.
