I will be in the Khumbu in February 2012 and was wondering if I could catch Losar in Namche.

I understand that the official date for Losar is February 22 and that it goes on for two weeks but that the first three days are the most active. So I was wondering if anyone knows what might be happening on any of these early days and whether it would be worth staying for? I'd be especially interested if there were any masked dances at this time. I will have flights to catch so the daily planning is important.

Thanks in advance - Dave

Hi. I was in Namche in spring 2008 and explored the town on a free day when I was adjusting to the
altitude. There was only one small temple on the outskirts of town, and the sole lama was leaving just as
I arrived. I got to look around for a second, then he locked the place up.

Further up, you'd want to consider Tengboche - the main monastery for the Khumbu. The other small town
that had a thriving monastery was in Khumjung - the town where the Hillary School is. I knew some hikers
who made the trip there and back from Namche in one day. Tengboche is a full day hike (up, up, up) from
Namche.

BTW, if you have to get close to Luckla, I also saw a small very interesting monastery in the hills above
Luckla, on the way to Namche near Phakding. There is a guesthouse nearby, and it's no more than a few hours walk back to Luckla. I could dig through my notes for the exact location if you're interested.

Hope this helps.
