The Golden Jubly celiberations of K2 to mark the 50th anniversary of the fist
success on K2 by the Italians in 1954 are starting in the Northern Areas of
Pakistan soon.
This year has seen the largest number of trekkers visiting Baltoro glacier to
reach the base camp of K2.
A large number of mountaineering expeditions are also planning to visit the
area as authorities have reduced the mountaineering royalty by 50% during
2004 and increased the trekking peak limit to 6500m that can be climbed
without a permit during 2004.
The first man to successfully reach K-2 area and traverse Gondogoro La was
Dr. Ulf Riede from Germany whose trekking expedition was arranged by
ADVENTURE TRAVEL based in Skardu. He was led by mountain guide Zahid
Hussain of Khaplu an area close to Ladakh.
The security situation remained normal in Skardu despite of protests in Gilgit
area during early June.
