Hi Guys,

I'll be in Naples, Italy for a medical student placement in Jan-Feb 2013, but I have 1 week free where from the 8th-15th February to do some trekking.

I really like trekking/hiking mountains and I understand it's winter so options are limited, but what are my options considering I have about 7 days? I have proper hiking shoes (scarpa) and I'm fit, so looking for something challenging, not an easy walk.

I will already be doing Mt Vesuvius and Etna while on placement so this 7 days is all free, I need to back in Rome on the night of the16th to catch my plane home to Sydney!

Hi.

One region not often featured on this forum is Abruzzo (3 hours from Naples, 2 from Rome), which sports the highest peaks of the Apennines (many peaks well over 2000m and the two highest just under 3000m) and some spectacular trekking. Much of the region is raw, untamed and relatively untouched by tourism. With three national parks, you're spoilt for choice of hiking routes, and many not for the faint hearted either, so you will certainly be challenged!

That said, as you point out, you will be coming in the winter. Last year the region was under 2m of snow in February, but that was the worst winter for many many years. If you're still looking for ideas come February, do keep an eye on the weather in Abruzzo - if it's not too bad, the upper levels may not be an option (unless you're skiing), but the foothills may certainly be worth exploring. I'd fly to Marrakech and go to the Atlas if I were you. Or go skiing in Italy.
