my wife and i are planning a 4 day trek from switzerland to austria as part of our 5 month jaunt through europe. we are both taking 65L packs with us (though they will be packed lightly). is this going to be a problem?

i can't see any way of downsizing our packs for the trek because we are starting and finishing in completely different locations.

has anybody else encountered this problem?

It is the weight that counts not the volume but the less you carry the more you are likely to enjoy the trip. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with. Some people (not me!) are comfortable carrying 30kg over hard terrain, some struggle with half that or less. I suggest you try some full day hikes with packs loaded with your expected gear before you set out on your trip and see how you feel. Try to match the terrain you expect to be walking over.

A big factor in weight for this kind of trip is food and water. In ther Alps you should not need to carry much water as you can collect it on the way (treat/filter as necessary) and food depends on your route and what opportunities there are to buy as you go. Whether you are camping or staying in huts / hotels is obviously also important.
