Hi! I'm going to Iceland in July and I'm hoping to go trekking for some days. I've been reading about different routes, but I'm not sure what to do. I'd like to go for the summit of Hvannadhalsnukur, but I want to do something more. I enjoy backpacking and I'm prepared for walking for many days on my own and camping since I don't have anyone with me (yet). Anyone have any trekking/mountaineering experience from Iceland? Routes, beautiful places, attractions that can be reached by foot etc are greatly appreciated!

If anyone want to join me for a walk feel free to PM me! I'll be there from 25.July.

-Anders

Probably the most popular route goes from Landmannalaugar hot springs south for 2-3 days into þorsmörk, and from there another 1-2 days over the Fimmvörðuhals saddle to meet the route 1 on the south coast. A really nice walk with a steep climb on day one and then gently losing altitude into þorsmörk. If I did it again I might go north instead, and get to relax in the hot springs AFTER the walk rather than before! Plenty of huts along the way and a few nice campsites in the otherwise mostly rocky ground.

Take a look at the east side of the west fjords for some sea-level trekking. This area was practically deserted in the sixties, and now sees just a few hikers.

Hi Anders, I went for the Landmannalaugar-Skogar trek two years ago and it is really worth the walking. I have already answered Tamara about it on her 8 of June entry in this same Branch but feel free to contact if you need further information about it
