Hi everyone,

Three of us are trekking in the Khumbu region during December 2012. To enhance our experience and lighten our load, we'd like to hire a guide/porter in Kathmandu before we start trekking. Can anyone with recent experience doing this give advice? Which agency is best? What traits should we be looking for in a guide? How much is a reasonable price for an experienced guide?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give us.

MIchael.

Hi Michael.

December is lesser tourist trekking in Nepal. it is better to put 2/3 days extra than program. winter season some time remote area flight of Lukla could be keep cancelling.

It is better to take a guide from Trekking agency from Kathmandu and take your porters from Lukla that guide and company will look after. There are many trekking companies. You can find registered trekking companies in TAAN.org.np.

USD 20 to 25 per day and flight cost in Nepali ruppees for the guide is perfect charge. A enough trekking experience and English speaking Guide.

Thank
Hemanta

hey!

Timing might not work for us.

We are doing the EBC + Gokyo via 3 passes this Nov for 17 days, aiming to experience Mani Rimdu, the most famous Sherpa festival. We need another 5 people to make it a great deal for everyone. If you are flexible to change, give me a shout.

If not, best of luck!! I am sure you will love it!

PS - I am not sure whether price is sensitive info posted on the forum, if you want some rough guideline, send me a private message, i can share with you as much as I have gathered.

Thank you to the three respondents so far.

Hemanta - Yes we will include days in our itinerary for delays and other circumstances. We shall hire a guide and a porter in Kathmandu through a TAAN registered company. We're starting our trek in Shivalaya so Lukla will be too late to hire a porter. Thank you for your advice :)

spneupane - Thank you for your advice, we will be sure to hire TAAN registered guides and porters :)

luya - Unfortunately we won't start out trek from Shivalaya until December 4th. From there we go straight up to EBC and then over Cho La to Gokyo and then down to Lukla to fly out. We might see you on your way back down! I will PM you as I'd like to hear what you have to say. Best of luck for your trekking :)
