Hallo,
I woudl like to make holidays in Northern Pakistan next summer a with a few hikes like Nanga Parbat base camps or Baltoro Glacier.
I am quite fit but don't have any mountains material ( just a pair of good boots) would like to know which level of condition I need to do such a trek.
I sit really hard to make the trip To K2 / Concordia and gondogoro la trek. Is it difficult to organise.
I was thinking of passing through a reliable agency like Adventure travel or the one of Simone in Gilgit.
Thx for advice or info

K2/ and Gondogoro La is a demanding but extremely beauty trek – you can hire porters to make things easier for you.
You need a little bit more than good boots – expect temperatures in the night over –20, heavy snow... so you will need good gear
If you are fit – its no problem at all –
Malik from Adventure Travel is a great help (I did it with him last May)– but you are right its difficult to organise
Nanga Parbat – is less demanding and easy to organise – but you will see this mountain from the road to scardu where the trek starts
Questions ?

The K2 Gondogoro La trek is amazing, Concordia is awesome, I could have spent weeks there! You need to organise this trek through an agency as it's on a sensitive border area and permits are required but this isn't too much of a problem. The group that I went with last Aug (trekkers found through LP TT) used www.atp.com.pk one of our group was in Pakistan and went to many agencies and they were the cheapest at the time and were very professional and well organised. No problems with porters etc. However as Ulf said you'll need more than just boots, you could rent gear from the agency but you only really need a good sleeping bag and warm clothes (very warm for crossing the Gondogoro at 4am!) The trek itself isn't too hard, using an ageny you'll only be carrying a day bag and usually only walking for about 4 hours a day so bring card, book etc oh and stack of camera film and batteries! In Aug there wasn't much snow but you should always be prepared for extemes in weather at any time!

Otherwise there are loads of outstanding treks in Pakistan easily accesable if you are prepard to carry all of your supplies, tent etc. Like Batura glacier, Rush lake.... there are too many to mention.

If you want any more info feel free to send mail.

Steve.

Hi Ulf,

You said you did the trek in early May and the LP trekking guide has the season listed as June-Aug. Did you encounter any early season problems, or was it just a bit colder at that time?

I'm probably going to do the baltoro trek this summer, but need to be back in Canada by July 1. This means, I should be trekking by June 1 at the latest.

Cheers,
Jonathan.

Hi Jon hyat,

May is early for Gondogoro La as there is much snow on Vygne glacier and pass
and probably there is no fixed rope that is a great help in crossing this difficult
pass. Specially I do not know if porters can manage without the fixed rope. So
best to keep within June to August period. I am told that you can do this trek
until middle of September but than much depends on weather condition in the
mountains.

Hey WanderingBuddha,

I ended up booking for June 3rd, so I should be good. The trekking company said that this year was an especially heavy snow year so the snow will probably still be around in June anyway. No worries...I climb peaks all year round here in Canada. It's just a little more difficult!

Thanks for the info...

Cheers,
Jonathan.
