My wife and I are doing a 3 night backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon in late November. We will be starting at the South Rim's Hermit Trail head. I'm know that the weather ranges from high 50's to low 40's - but I wanted to ask someone that has experienced those conditions within the Canyon what they would suggest is adequate layers to pack?

What would you be comfortable wearing once the sun goes down?

I just got out of GC this Monday,I know the weather was a little bit warmer than what you're going to have.Remember there are no fires allowed and by 7pm its already dark and cold.I had a rain jacket,a small packable down jacket,a light fleece and long sleeve tshirts.I'm really cold blooded so after sunset I had them all on:)
Gloves and a beanie always help.Hope that helps:)

I would second Laurika's recommendations, light layers with a hat and gloves for the morning and evening. Getting down low on the south side of the river you will not be getting a lot of direct sun. Trudging back up to the rim works up quite a sweat, so take quick dry tops, not cotton. It can get quite warm if you're lucky. Know the water sources on the way up, You can pump from the river when you're at the bottom.
