Can anyone tranlate or say what do the abbreviations stand for ( which is the most difficult and the easiest one ) in hiking/climbing?
PD- represented eg by Breithorn and Mont Blanc ( cant believe its the easiest...)
PD, PD, AD, AD+(jungfrau, Dom), andl ast one DD(Matterhorn). does it stand for Difficult?`(eg Weisshorn in Bernese oberland)
I am sure that Mount Blanc is easier to climb than Matterhorn...... so PD/D shall be the hardes...corect me if iam wrong

Check out the grades here: http://www.climbing.apollo.lv/grading.htm<BR>Watch out if the guidebook says "ABO". ;-)

Starting from easiest grades are F (Facile); PD (Peu dificile); D (Dificile); TD (Tres Dificile). Sometimes in each case followed by + or - to indicate high or low in grade.

We are talking about CLIMBING grades here. Hiking is something else. Happyr is right, but did not include all grades. The complete list is:
F (facile) - easy
PD (peu difficile) - not so difficult
AD (assez difficle) - rather difficult
D (difficile) - difficult
TD (tres difficile) - very d.
ED (extremement difficile)
EX (exceptionellement difficile)
ABO (abominable)

These are called French grades and are supposed to give an overall evaluation of difficulties, taking into account the length of the route, its remoteness, objective dangers, etc.
The "normal" French route up Mt. Blanc is in fact graded around PD, but that does not really mean it is easy -- it is a long route, there are plenty of crevasses, and you have to be very fit and know to use crampons, ice axe, rope, etc.
Bottom line is: if you ask this kind of questions that probably means you are a newcomer, so in the event that you'd like to do some climbs in the Alps, do go with someone more expert, or hire a guide (which is of coure costly, but also a life insurance does not come for free....

Thanks all the posters.
the basic question would be the difference between climbing and hiking...
Ive done all Polish slovakian Slovenian and Romanian or Bulgarian mountains without using crampoons ( no ice cover os snow anyway)plus Turkis Ercyies and Kackar.. and all this stuff so I could be called a hiker am I not wrong not a climber...? but I surely do know what is the differencebetween going up using all that staff., and I would not enjoy it as it is too dangeous... I prefer via ferrata which are protected, I mean one can go up and down holdonh onto the rock itself or to the 'metel steps'.- its profane for climber to use this kind of help ....but to enjoy safely why not try?
can you reccommend me some hikes in Bernese oberland or Zermatt region ...kind of Facile or PD to have a hint about difficulities...
ps I presume Slovebnian Triglav Skrtlica and so on to be F....correct me if im wrong
chris
