Despite the general strike today I drove with my motorbike to Thamel, Kathmandu where I was talking to some tourists who were telling me that for the last few days their flights from Kathmandu to Lukla have been cancelled due to bad weather and fog in Lukla. Over the last few days they always went early in the morning to the airport and are waiting and waiting only to learn after a few hours that the flights have been cancelled again.
Does anyone has the same information?

VERY SURPRISING - NO CANCELLATION HAS OCCURED. IT IS DUE TO THE LACK OF PASSANGER, WHICH YOU ALIENS DO NOT UNDERSTAND. THE AIRLINES DOES NOT TAKE THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DROWNING RISK IF THERE IS NO FULL LOAD TWO WAYS.
SINCE THEY DO NOT CARRY LOCAL PASSANGERS IN LUKLA - THE FLIGHTS ARE LIKELY TO BE EMPTY AS NEPAL FACES RECESSION IN TOURISM
FINALLY, FLIGHTS ARE DELAYED AND NOT CANCCELLED AS PER THE ENGLISH DICTIONARY.

hopefully this helps. i was flying to lukla a few months ago and yes my flight was almost cancelled due to fog, those things happen in nepal. and when you fly into lukla youll understand why they dont fly in fog. picture yourself in a 10 seater bushplane, whizzing around mountains in the himalayas only to land on a runway not much wider than the plane itself maybe 100m long built into the side of a mountain. not something you want to do when its foggy. if the flights are cancelled there is defenetly good reason. have a safe trip and dont climb too high too fast.
jayme

flights would be delayed due to bad weather, not cancelled.
A few years ago friends of mine were stuck in Lukla for 11 days waiting for a flight out.

Back in 1998, the day i had to fly to Lukla, i waited with my guide on the airport for about four hours, when they said we had to come back early the next morning because there was too much fog.
The next morning we were supposed to be on a very early flight , but it was foggy again, until about 11 oclock when we finally took off. My Nepali guide was very excited, as it was his first flight ever.
After half an hour of flying, the plane returned though, as it was impossible to land in Lukla because of the weather again. The Yeti air hostess at the airport hall, who had never been in a plane either, kept on smiling beautifully.
the next morning we finally made it to Lukla. A 14 days trek became a 12 day one.

Hey Bluesheep, and any others interested - I'd recommend the walk to/from Jiri. Yep, it's a few days long, but it's more than worth it for the fantastic scenery and the sense of achievement at the end of the day, having crossed magnificent, challenging mountain passes. You'll meet fellow adventurers - and it certainly will take less than the eleven days you sound as though you might spend waiting for a flight to/from KTM.
Oh, and at Phakding stay at the Kala Patar Lodge and tell them their Australian friend Judi, who visited in March and April, said hello (please).
Enjoy.
