I am looking for a five-day hike in Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, or anywhere in between) in the second half of September. I was interested in doing parts of the Haute Route, but apparently the huts are shutting up by then and the weather is getting dodgy. Any suggestions? (Long/strenuous days are good, navigation is not a problem, but routes requiring mountaineering skills are not so good.)

"Along the (so called Walkers) Haute Route, apparently the huts are shutting up by then in the second half of September) and the weather is getting dodgy"
Who told you that nonsense?
BTW: the weather in the Alps cannot get worse than it is since 7 weeks

Thanks, OK, so presumably "Who told you that nonsense" means you think it is not true. So, what is true? The refuges are still open? Just the winter rooms, or the whole huts? Is it still necessary to book between about 20 and 27 September? What about the weather? Is it normally still warm and fine? What is the weather now, and is it expected to get worse? Cold, rain, snow... Has the apocalypse begun in the Swiss Alps? And how about other suggestions for where to go? How are the Dolomites that time of year? All the same questions apply...

Obviously noone here (or anywhere) can predict the weather in September 2014. If you go further South, your chances improve, that's obvious too.

Or north. In Finnish Lapland and far North September is the best time for hiking. Unfortunately it is not included in the preferred area.
