dear fellow trekkers,
We plan to do a crossing of the island reunion in April 05 with a tent.
Does anyone have experience in self catering while trekking?
Are there food stores in the Cirques - how frequent?
thanks
thomas

Great choice!!!
I've done Reunion crossing in October last year and I loved it. Camping is no problem, usually one stays in the vicinity of a gite anyway...
Now to the catering. We carried plenty of food from St Denis, but it turned out one can get food also in smaller villages. Just don't expect much. Rice, maybe something to put on rice, maybe maybe bread, fruites, chocolates & La Dodo... Major food stores are found for example in Dos d'Ane; Cirque de Salazie and Cilaos aren't really a problem at all. There is a nice little store in Roche Plate, otherwise they are usually called bars and sell food one expects from a bar... I think I remember another one in Marla, but didn't need it as it was close to Cilaos and we still had enough food.
The point is, most of the trekkers (well, all!) stay in gites and they get breakfast and dinner there. What they need are snacks, and this is what you get basically everywhere.
Just one more thing - there is no water between the Cilaos-Dufour water-point (you will see it once you're there) and.. Bourg Murat. Or at least we didn't find it - so that was the only time we were really worried about food/water. Got to BM just in time to find the food store open!
Have fun - but I'm sure you will!
