Hi all I am new here, I am booked to go to EBC in September 2012. I have a question that I hope I can get help with. Living in South Africa it is really expensive to buy trekking equipment. I plan to buy or hire the following items in Nepal
1. Trekking poles
2. Sleeping bag
3. Gaiters
4. Down Jacket

Could someone please give me a rough price of these items.
Thanks in advance.

Hello

Trekking poles maybe about 800 rupees to buy, don't know about hiring.

I recently got a quote for sleeping bags and a -10C (which should suffice for EBC at that time) was 6500 rupees to buy, 60 rupees per day to hire plus a refundable deposit of 6000 rupees. A -15C bag is 7500 to buy, same price to hire.

Don't know about gaiters.

'Light' jackets (should be OK for that time) are 4500 rupees, 'heavy jackets' are 5500 rupees. I didn't ask about hire costs but 50 rupees per day is my best guess.

The bags and jackets are made to the shop owners specs using good quality down and they have a good reputation; it's possible they are cheaper elsewhere.

Enjoy your trek.

Hi

Yes, loads of gear shops close to the hotel - you can't miss them.

In addition to equipment in Kathmandu, there also seemed to be plenty of poles, clothing, sleeping bags etc at in Lukla and Namche.
