Hi:

I am planning a trekking week in Central Europe (8-10 days, end of August). I hiked in Slovenia two years ago and loved it there, so now I am considering Romania, Slovakia or Montenegro as options - can't decide though. I am used to long walking days and steep slopes, but I am also fine with easier walks as long as the place is worth it. If possible, I'd like something not too similar to Slovenia's Julian Alps, not too expensive, with varied landscapes, genuine... Logistics are not an issue this time because, since I have no time and none of my friends are available these days, I may just join an organized trek. My only doubt is where should I go. I know my question is rather vague but, still... any idea would be welcome. Ayone has trekked around those places there - any suggestion? Thank you!

Apuseni Mountains in Transylvania is a beautiful area. Very different from the Alps. It's not very high(well below 2000m) but it's made of limestone and is a real treasury of all kinds of karst pehomena. It's like a fairytale world, there are surprises at every turn.

The most spectacular place is the Csodavár(Romanian name is Cetatile Ponorului) which is a huge cave, the roof partly collapsed where you can walk through.

I hope you can find some organized trek there. It's not a very famous place, except among Hungarian and Romanian trekkers.

I certainly don't recommend Slovakia. Too many tourists on a very small area.
I'd recommend Montenegro which has very different areas and hikes.

Hi, we are a couple who are planning to come to Romania (August 26). We want to do 5-7 days trekking and do it in the best place in terms of scenery and wildlife. If you have made your decision where you're going, I'd loev if you would share it with me - we can also go together or partly together. Thanks for now. You can contact me also privately.

Hi Solga,

Thank you for the kind invitation! I am rather stressed now, since I received an unexpected work assignment just yesterday, which may force me to delay the trip... I may have to cancel it altogether :-( The only positive side to this is, I had not yet bought the plane ticket. My most suitable option was Montenegro, but now I don't really know. If the assignment didn't confirm itself and I had a chance, I'd let you know. Otherwise, I wish you a wonderful trip - enjoy!
