Strictly speaking this isn't really travel related, but I'm hoping I can get some useful advice. Does anyone know how to completely wipe a hard drive so that personal information can't be retrieved? It won't connect to the internet, so I can't download any programs. Apart from taking a hammer to it or dropping it overboard on the cross-Channel ferry what can I do?
Thanks in advance

Hi all,
A question for you budding photographers out there:
I'm looking to join a photography forum where I can discuss technique, post pictures for honest feedback (ie not an ego-massage) and equally give honest feedback without mollycoddled types taking umbrage and accusing me of being a troll!
Can anyone recommend one? - Preferablly catering to photojournalism/documentary and travel.
Also wish to avoid any fanboy or gearhead forums (which seem to be the norm)

Hello,

I am travelling to Europe soon for several months, namely Germany, Austria, possilby Italy. I do not want to tie myself down too much, so was looking at getting a Tablet so I can book accommodation as I go and look at transport options etc. I am completely technology illiterate it all confuses me so much.

I basically want one to surf the internet - mainly for sights, transport timetables and accommodation. Also email - these will be my main uses though would be good if I could watch tv…

Hi All,

no exactly 'travel tech' i know..

Does anyone have any experience with prepaid travel cards?
Theres quite a few available these days (at least here in Australia).

Most providers of these cards say that the local ATM operators "may impose their own fees". If that is the case, Im wondering is there much advantage over using your own banks ATM card.

I realize, one advantge is that you can lock in FX rates. But this could work either IN or AGAINST your favour.

interested to hear of…

We usually rent some kind of WiFi when we travel so we can have internet where ever we are. We usually use Tep Wireless when we're in Europe, yet they do not work in the countries we are traveling to this year.

Does anyone know if there's a pocket WiFi we can rent that will work in Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro & BiH?

Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm going to attempt Kilimanjaro in a few weeks time and obviously want to get a couple of photos at the top. Most likely will be bringing my Canon S95. Its 6 days to the top, and will be starting out with 2 fully charged batteries.

Could anyone please provide some do's and dont's or other pieces of advice/suggestions ..... as in .... what would you do!

Example: Should I remove batteries during nights to save power? I know I have to try to keep the batteries warm the further I go up…

Got a Windows 8 HP Envy and am still wondering how to type certain symbols. I have a typical QWERTY keyboard and chose English (UK) as my standard keyboard settings.

If I press SHIFT + 2 I get "
If I press SHIFT + 3 I get £
If I press SHIFT + ' I get @

I have it pretty much figures out but I don't know how to type the vertical line needed for TT link shortcuts. I can do it using the touchscreen but it isn't very convenient because most of the types I touch the screen the touch keyboard comes and…

Hi

I have a question relating to credit cards and paying abroad. I’m from the UK. I'm not sure if this belongs in the 'travel tech' section but couldn't think where else to put it.

I’m looking to stay at the ymca hostel in hong kong, and have emailed them as you can’t pay for their dorms online.

I have received a reply asking for my credit card details. Firstly, is it recommended to send your credit card details by email (i.e. in safety terms), and what needs to be included? (do you need to…

I'm looking to move to East Timor for a year and will need my own laptop.
I will need one that will be able to work in hot humid conditions without breaking down.
There will be no air con for most or all of the time.

I'd be looking at using the Windows system not Apple

I'd be buying the laptop whilst in Australia

Any ideas both about
what to buy ?

and

what not to buy?

thank you
