Can anybody give any advice on what is the best device to take to South east asia (Thailand mostly) .

  • I need something to make calls with, upload photos/ save photos on, and use wifi

I cant use my samsung galaxy phone to make calls (because its locked to a network), so do i opt for a cheap handset or make use of public phones when away? I can however, use it for the wifi- but do i get a tablet so its bigger?

I should take #2’s advice to cross post this in China
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2334464
and Travel-Tech as well.

Just for the last few days, whenever I clicked on reading a topic in the forum, a popup would show “internetautoguide.com”. I needed to close this popup to read the topic.

The strange thing is, this hijacking of event just happened on lonelyplanet forum only, absolutely not on other websites (travel, news, Chinese, etc) I visited.

After reading #1’s…

Good afternoon

I am leaving for Tanzania in October and will be travelling around Eastern and Southern Africa for approximately 1 year. The majority of my stay will be in Nkhata Bay in Malawi. I currently use a laptop at home to browse the internet and complete work but I have no inclination to travel with this as it is far to heavy and bulky.

I'm no expert when it comes to netbook's and ipad's and nor have I travelled for such a long sustained period so I would be very grateful for any…

Hey I'm finishing high school at the end of the year and am planning to go backpacking for about 4 to 6 months (depending on how my money lasts).
I am bringing my iPhone 5 with me to use WiFi but I'm worried it wont be good enough or easy to contact people back at home.
My parents say I can't bring my laptop, so I'm kind of not sure what to do.
Can anyone recommend something that isn't too expensive but portable? or do you think that the phone is enough?
Thanks so much
Emma

Hello,

Okay I think I have narrowed it down to two tablets to take to Europe with me. I can get a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 16GB for $126.64 AUD or an Ipad mini 16GB $45.64 or 32 GB for $157.32 AUD.

I played with both a little today, but could see the benefits of both. The Samsung can have its memory expanded and believe easily connected to any laptop. But can I use itunes on the Samsung.

I have read and watched many reviews online about both and they seem pretty close.

I posted earlier and my…

http://www.et3.com/

A company in the US is developing a transportation system that could take capsules traveling through airless tubes at 4000mph, meaning that once the infrastructure was built, you could one day get from New York to Beijing in 2 hrs (over the Bering Strait, not across any big oceans). It would be 1/10th the cost of high speed rail, and a ticket would likely be 1/10th the cost of an airline ticket. This would obviously make world travel far more accessible to the masses.

Would…

Hey guys,

i am going on a long trip journey this summer. 2 months Guadeloupe, 2 months Canada, 4 months South America. So that means I will be living in these countries and not traveling, unfortunately.
And now I am thinking about the perfect luggage to go with. I need to take a lot with me due to the clima change and as I am working there I need some additional stuff. That is why a normal trekking back pack with capacity of about 85l is useless.
My dream bag would be:
a duffel bag with roller AND…

Hello,
I am going to travel to some tropic destination. Most probably Fiji. I'm mostly interested in taking shots of wildlife, landscapes, seascpaes, beaches , birds , and more.
Though not too experienced in photography, I would like to buy a good camera.
I have been offered to buy Nikon D5200. I would also like to match a lens to its body to meet my goals which would not over qualify due to budget restrictions.
I was offered Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF or Nikon
