WORD hates me. Help

Help

Word is driving me to despair. Obviously I struck the wrong key/tab/button/something but I don’t know how to fix it.

I used to be able to highlight a word within the text of a document and hit the backspace key (note, NOT the delete key, but rather the regular old backspace). When I hit backspace, the highlighted word would be deleted. NOW it doesn’t delete the word but rather just moves to the front of the word. HELP

What have I done and how do I fix this?

I really miss having an IT person on site.

oops wish i could delete this post. as soon as i got back from lunch (ie had food and therefore brain power, i fixed the problem myself)
