I have broadband internet at home but would like to upgrade to wireless. However there is no wi-fi spots in my area. Does that mean that I can't have wireless internet in my house? If it is possible for me to have wireless internet in my house how do I go about it? What equipment would I need and how much is it? I currently have an ADSL modem which is plugged into phoneline and PC.
Simplest option would be to get an ADSL router with WiFi, as that usually works out cheaper than buying a separate access point.
Make sure you know how to secure it against unauthorised users though as you could be liable if someone else uses your AP for illegal activities; and check that you're not in breach of your terms of service by installing one.
I can't remember where you are, but for the UK dabs.com is a good supplier, assuming items are in stock.

If you already have broad band internet - then you can install your own wireless system in a short space of time - and easily.
You will need an ADSL broad band router with wireless capability - mine is a Netgear DG834G - which I've had for several years and am perfectly happy with. It has 4 wired ports and wi-fi antenna. There are plenty more on the market.
You will also need a wireless access point for each machine you want to use in a 'wireless' way.
(Many Laptops come wireless enabled).
You have essentially 3 options here. For a desktop PC you could buy a PCI wireless access point card - which means you have to take the cover off the machine and put the card in one of the spare slots - assuming there is one - check first.
Otherwise for both Desktops and Laptops you can use a USB access point.
For Laptops - but not Desktops you can also buy a PCMCIA card.
The router will cost about £35-£50 - but check - and the access points are around £20 for any style.
It's easy to set up - just follow the instructions - but a note of caution. Make sure you turn on the encryption (basically a password system) - you have a choice of WEP or WPA and the latter is the more secure. If you don't, your neighbours will soon find you wireless signal -and use it for their own broadband - for free.
