Hello All,
When I use Wifi on my laptop the connection speed cycles between 54Mbps and 1Mbps. This cycle is usually every 5 minutes. The signal strength is always good.
I thought this was normal but I have just noticed that other people next to me, on the same connection are always on 54Mbps. I have two computers running next to me now, they are both on 54Mbps mine is on 5Mbps. My computer is the better one. (Newer). Sony VGN-S4M/S.
Any ideas?
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks
MFF.

I have been looking at Dr. TCP but I looks like I have to pay for the download.
I am not really sure what I am fixing with it.
Is it a registry problem or just changing download speeds?
Its a bit over my head, I don't want to make computer worse.

See here for info and download, its free.
Well there isn't much you can fix it apart from utilities or else it may be a hardware issue, that is try diff Wifi card out or access points (routers). Some perform better than others.

Sounds like interference to me. Whether it's access points clashing frequencies, a bad card somewhere, bluetooth or what I wouldn't like to say. An interesting article
I find the five minute thing interesting - I suspect that's the key.
Best solution? Normal wired ethernet, it's way faster and a lot more reliable too ;)

Rayonline the link you gave me is for a free test. Obviously it finds loads of problems then tells me to repair them I have to buy the repair.
Am I doing it wrong?
Lan, I will look at the forum, thanks.

Go back to download page, this should be the screenshot:
Screen shot
The top left area it says TCP receive window, I have mine at 17520. On the bottom drop down box make sure your wifi card device is selected.
Not sure what you mean by free test. See my screenshot link that is what the software should look like.

I don't think it's a TCP problem, more a wifi problem.
NetStumbler (use Google) will show you the channels of all the wifi routers in your area. If you find that your router is sharing a channel with many others, switch to another. The channels you can use are 1, 6, and 11, other channels overlap.
Next try updating the internal wifi card firmware and XP drivers and the router firmware.
If it still doesn't work... Do you have hotfix KB893357 installed? It appears there's a problem with it which affects some combinations of hardware. If necessary, change encryption from WPA2 AES to WPA TKIP first on the router and second XP's wifi configuration screen then uninstall KB893357 from add/remove programs. You'll need to tick a box at the top to show updates.

Other things...
In between first and second paragraphs... Bluetooth and cordless phones interfere with wireless routers, although maybe not in this case if only one computer is affected. Test by turning off inbuilt bluetooth, bluetooth dongles attached to the computer, bluetooth on your mobile, the base station.
In between second and third paragraphs... If you've got WPA2 AES, your hardware might not be capable of it. Change back to WPA + TKIP to see if that fixes it. If it does, you can stop there, or you can try firmware and driver upgrades in the third paragraph and retry WPA2 AES.
