Got a Windows 8 HP Envy and am still wondering how to type certain symbols. I have a typical QWERTY keyboard and chose English (UK) as my standard keyboard settings.

If I press SHIFT + 2 I get "
If I press SHIFT + 3 I get £
If I press SHIFT + ' I get @

I have it pretty much figures out but I don't know how to type the vertical line needed for TT link shortcuts. I can do it using the touchscreen but it isn't very convenient because most of the types I touch the screen the touch keyboard comes and goes in a flash.

The button needed to give the vertical line in conjunction with SHIFT gives ~ with SHIFT, and without, #
The button just below the escape button gives ` and with shift ¬

Thanks for any help!

Take a look at UK vs US Keyboard or Google "uk keyboard layout"

Thanks for the link. Seems I have a mix of both keyboard, considering I can type ¬ but have no Alt Gr key and no way to type the euro sign.

the link didn't answer my questions about the way to type the vertical line though. I have the key, which says both the vertical line and the back-slash but can type neither.

You didn't mention what physical keyboard you have, however, you can just play with the alt and shift keys to find out what pops up.

It is a laptop. So can't use the alt codes.

What happens if you press the key with ~ and # on it?

Not the alt codes, but alt and a letter or number such as alt4 or alti.

The key with the ~ gives ` and ¬ with shift.

3 and shift gives £.

Joaquinx, typing alt with any number/letter doesn't give anything.

I have some the same problem with a notebook I have with a German keyboard, amplified when I plug in a QWERTY keyboard.

I made a small Notepad file with some that are the most used or most elusive and copy and paste.

Or an ASCII chart might help. Millions on the net.
