Storing music online - advice needed!

I am planning a RTW trip and will be taking an iPod with me. However I'm anticipating the risk that my iPod may break/get stolen while I'm away and would like to back up my music online so that I can access it should I end up needing another iPod or MP3.

Whilst it will be on my iTunes account, will I be able to access and download this from internet cafes? As I believe you have to register iTunes to a limited number of specific computers and devices etc so not sure if this would work? And also, as some of my music is on CDs which I'm uploading, would I be able to access this from my iTunes account remotely or only from my laptop here?

My other option is to back my music up to an online storage website such as these ones

Can anyone advise on whether I would then be able to access this music remotely from public computers?

How about just taking a USB pen drive with backups as MP3s stored on it?

1) if you worry about it being stolen, you may take more care of your possessions.

2) when you are traveling, make sure you put the iPod in a suitable storage container, to prevent it from being bounced around too much.

3) I like GussieG's idea of taking a USB stick with music stored on there too. Although it wouldn't hold nearly the same amount as an iPod, you could get a fair amount stored and, with the cost of USB2 sticks dropping (in favour of USB3), you'll get one for a cheap price.

Why use iTunes?
Just download from YouTube. Its library is just as big as iTunes - and 100% free.

You could, I guess, but how long would this take to search for, download and convert an MP3 player's fill of tracks (say an 8GB device)?

I got loads of tunes I love on my iTunes not on Youtube. I'm taking a netbook. My ipods just a shuffles, so bomb proof, but low capacity. Netbook will keep it fresh as well as charge it. I'll be stumped if something goes wrong, but you can only cover so many eventualities

As a rough guess.... 10 seconds to find, 20 seconds to download - and maybe a further 20 to convert.
So around 60 tracks an hour, on continuous.
Just my choice.

I'd be guessing that the figures would be based on a reasonable internet connection with a reasonable speed PC.

Although the OP has not indicated which countries will be visited, in my recent journeys to SE Asia (Cambodia; India; Bangladesh), I'm still encountering PC's which are 386 & 486 systems. The download speeds of such systems is painfully slow.

So the suggested times could be increased 3-4 times.

My maximum (claimed) internet speed is around 60mb. But that does vary quite a bit.
I started using YouTube when it first appeared. Back then it wasn't possible to download straight away.
Then along came RealDownloader - and now there's YTD (YouTube Downloader). It's very fast.
Both programmes will convert any format to any other.
Sure, sometimes the tracks might have a blip - but I've experienced that with iTunes as well.
Overall. I'm very happy with the quality on YouTube as well.
