This might sound like a stupid question but, if I have a disc already recorded in MP3 and I re-record it also in MP3, do I double up the space available. What I mean is that I can get about 9 hours of recording on to a 700MB disc so, once having re-recorded it, would it in theory, be possible to get 18 hours? I'm not thinking about the quality of the sound, just the theory.

No you cant do that its already in MP3 format. The only way to get more tracks on the CD would be to make them a lower bitrate. A much better alternative would be to simply have more than 1 CD.
