Its also 4 3 in live view , but I found an explanation in the manual that I had overlooked -
------------------

QUOTE - "JPEG images are cropped to the selected aspect ratio , RAW images however are not cropped but are instead saved with the information on the selected aspect ratio . When RAW images are played back the selected aspect ratio is shown by a frame ".

That's what I thought. Your capture is set to something different than 4:3 and jpegs are cropped accordingly. Change the setting to 4:3 and your jpegs should be full size like the raw image.

Its set at 4:3 , the way I took what was said in the manual is that RAW is always the fullest frame , so to get fuller frame JPEGS would need to select bigger setting than 4:3 , or otherwise just generate jpegs from the raw development window. without dragging them into the frame thats shown.

Yes, that sounds right, safe a raw only, develop in software and then safe as full size jpeg.

This article - {http://dpexpert.com.au/?p=2256} also touches on Tool4Fool's point about the limitations of the free bundled converter CDs that come with cameras . It rates Olympus and Canon as having the better ones,

Not a very good article in that link above.
The guy gets it all mixed up, apples and oranges.

Nikon for example has Nikon View as raw converter which is free and allows basic editing and convertingnof images.
Capture NX is a full raw editing software.

He gets raw converters mixed up with raw editors.

I think he wasn't satisfied with the Nikon raw converter . But I think answer to my original question is that I wasn't noticing much difference because I was lucky enough to have a camera that did a reasonable job of processing JPEG's.

He does not mention the Nikon View NX 2 raw software. Not at all. And its excellent by the way for a basic free raw converter.
He doesn't even look into the one from Sony, a major brand.
Not a good write up about raw converters.

Is the basic Sony converter good ?.

I found the workflow not very good and dislike their jpeg output.
Quite a lot of functions however.
